Quena (Kena) Flute
The quena or kena as it is also known, is a traditional Andean flute used commonly in all areas of traditional Peruvian music. The quena produces an exceptionally beautiful sound and has been played by the indigenous tribes of South America and their ancestors for countless generations, once being revered as a sacred icon. Although originating from the mountains of South America, the quena is a favourite of musicians and woodwind players all around the world.
Quenas are often made of bamboo and can have 4, 5 or 6 holes in the front, one at the back, and a u shaped notch at the mouth of the instrument. The six hole quena has a musical span of 3 octaves.

The sound in the first half of this video has not been enhanced in any way and was recorded in a standard household room, using a simple computer webcam and nothing else. As you can hear, this Mamani concert quena has an amazing sound even without any mics, eq or effects.

<p style=”text-align: center;”>The sound in the first half of these videos has not been enhanced in any way and was recorded in a standard household room, using a simple computer webcam and nothing else. As you can hear, this Mamani concert quena has an amazing sound even without any mics, eq or effects.</p>
<p style=”text-align: center;”>Most online songs, videos and quena demos are usually recorded professionally with added eq and effects such as reverb and delay to enhance that ‘mystical’ feeling produced by these types of instruments.</p>
<p style=”text-align: center;”>So to keep our demos in line with others you might find on the web and to give you an idea of how it sounds in comparison, I have included some basic reverb in the last half of each sample, to give our vids that real ‘Spirit of the Andes’ touch you’ll be familiar with.</p>

My best quality Quenas, for the price are most definately the ‘tweaked’ quena’s which I usually have for sale. Unfortunately I am out of stock at the moment but will have some more arriving very shortly in about 4 days time. The ‘Aymara’ quenas are less expensive but also very good instruments and I get great feedback from them. If you want a very ‘special’ Quena then my ‘bone’ quenas are absolutely beautiful, I usually have ones with metal or Ebony mouth pieces. The metal one is beautiful and I sold my last ebony mouthpiece one recently, but will have another coming in a few days. If money is not an object, I can request a pure ebony one to be made for you for a few hundred dollars also. I think it all depends on your budget.
So all in all, I would say…1. Tweaked quena. 2. Aymara quena and 3. If you want an extra special one for showing off, the bone quena.
Hopefully, in a few days I will have much more stock for you to view..

Hi, I’d like to buy one of your flutes but I already have an Shakuhachie made by Erik the Flute and I just can’t get a sound out of it!
I notice that Erik’s cut in the blown end is deeper and more V like than the ones shown in your photos – could that make things more difficult?
Hi Frank, all my flutes have mouthpeices with slightly differing size notches and shapes, but I think you’ll find once you can get a note out of one, you should be able to play them all if you can acheive the right technique.
They all differ slightly but the method is pretty much the same across all quena and quenacho. Not sure about the Shakuhachie.

However, our luthiers do make them by request and I could source one for you without a problem.

Thanks for your kind comments and I’m so glad you like your quena flute.
I do have other quenachos for sale but they are all generally tuned to the scale of Re Major (D) / Si minor (Bm). Quenachos are not usually made in the key of G as they would have to be made much larger to accommodate the lower notes. However, I do have a stunning Mama quena, which is quite large and tuned to G Maj.
It is a really amazing instrument and is lovely to play. You can see how big it is in relation to the quena and quenachos pictured alongside it in the gallery photos.

I would love to buy either a quena or a quenacho. I play the flute and love the sound of these instruments, particularly the quenacho. Can you tell me whether one is easier to play than the other. Would I be better starting with the quena? I have quite small hands so wonder if that will make the quenacho more difficult.
Also is it very different to blowing the flute?

Thank you for your enquiry. I would say the quena is definitely a much easier instrument to play than the quenacho, this generally down to the size of the quenacho being a much larger instrument. If you have small hands, I would advise to start with a quena as I have had a good few clients in the past who have found the quenacho a real struggle to play due to the wider spacing of the finger holes.
You’ll probably find the technique of blowing the quena quite difficult to master initially, but I’m sure once you’ve managed to gain the first few notes, you’ll find it a pleasure to play and should progress quite easily. The real trick is to master your breath control to be able to hit the various octaves at will and to keep the correct playing angle to keep your flute in tune.
Most people including myself, find them very addictive to play and a real challenge. I’m sure you will too.

Hi, I have a kena flute and I am keen to learn how to play, does anyone know if you can get a book in english with the fingering charts to play music and different tunes, hope someone can help.
