Quena (Kena) Flute
The quena or kena as it is also known, is a traditional Andean flute used commonly in all areas of traditional Peruvian music. The quena produces an exceptionally beautiful sound and has been played by the indigenous tribes of South America and their ancestors for countless generations, once being revered as a sacred icon. Although originating from the mountains of South America, the quena is a favourite of musicians and woodwind players all around the world.
Quenas are often made of bamboo and can have 4, 5 or 6 holes in the front, one at the back, and a u shaped notch at the mouth of the instrument. The six hole quena has a musical span of 3 octaves.

If you want a very ’special’ Quena then my ‘bone’ quenas are absolutely beautiful, I usually have ones with metal or Ebony mouth pieces. The metal one is beautiful and I sold my last ebony mouthpiece one recently, but will have another coming in a few days. If money is not an object, I can request a pure ebony one to be made for you for a few hundred dollars also. I think it all depends on your budget.
So all in all, I would say…1. Tweaked quena. 2. Aymara quena and 3. If you want an extra special one for showing off, the bone quena.
