During the early hours of Sept 27th 1986 during the European leg of the Damage Inc. tour, bassist Cliff Burton was killed when the tour bus skidded off the road and flipped several times. Although none of the other members of the band were seriously hurt, Cliff was thrown through a window and crushed as the bus fell on top of him.

The driver blamed black ice for the incident but several sources including James Hetfield believe that on that morning, no ice was found on the road and alcohol could be smelled on the driver’s breath. The skid marks found on the road were also said to be similar to those found in similar incidents where drivers had fallen asleep at the wheel.
No charges were ever brought against the driver and it was determined that the accident was not his fault.
The remaining members of the band decided that Cliff would want them to continue. Metallica released the documentary ‘Cliff ‘Em All’ as a tribute to Cliff’s time in the band and two years later released their 4th album ‘..And Justice For All’ which contained Cliff’s last writing credit on the song ‘To Live is to Die’.
