Master Of Puppets
Metallica were initially formed in Los Angeles, California in 1981, when guitarist James Hetfield answered an ad in a local newspaper placed by drummer Lars Ulrich, looking for musicians to jam with.
To this date they have sold over 100 million albums.
Fade To Black
The band’s name was initially stolen by Lars Ulrich after hearing the name Metallica mentioned by a friend who was brainstorming names for a local fanzine.
In 1982, after answering another ad in the Recycler magazine, Dave Mustaine joined the band and Metallica recorded it’s first original composition ‘Hit the Lights’ for a metal compilation Metal Massacre.
Trauma bassist Cliff Burton joined the band in late 1982 replacing bass player Ron McGovney. The band then moved to San Francisco where in 1983 promoter Johnny Zazula signed Metallica to his own record label Megaforce Records.
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Exodus guitarist Kirk Hammet joined on april 1st 1983 after lead guitarist Dave Mustaine was thrown out of the band due to increasing drug addiction, alcohol abuse and violent behaviour.
Dave Mustaine subsequently went on to form the thrash band Megadeth
Harvester of Sorrow
In 1983 Metallica recorded their first album ‘Metal Up Your Ass’. Due to conflicts between the record label and distributors, the album was subsequently renamed ‘Kill ‘Em All’.
The album Ride The Lightning was released in August 1984, and their 3rd album Master of Puppets was released in March 1986.
During the early hours of Sept 27th 1986 during the European leg of the Damage Inc. tour, bassist Cliff Burton was killed when the tour bus skidded off the road and flipped several times. Although none of the other members of the band were seriously hurt, Cliff was thrown through a window and crushed as the bus fell on top of him.
February 10, 1962 – September 27, 1986
The driver blamed black ice for the incident but several sources including James Hetfield believe that on that morning, no ice was found on the road and alcohol could be smelled on the driver’s breath. The skid marks found on the road were also said to be similar to those found in similar incidents where drivers had fallen asleep at the wheel.
No charges were ever brought against the driver and it was determined that the accident was not his fault.
The remaining members of the band decided that Cliff would want them to continue. Metallica released the documentary ‘Cliff ‘Em All’ as a tribute to Cliff’s time in the band and two years later released their 4th album ‘..And Justice For All’ which contained Cliff’s last writing credit on the song ‘To Live is to Die’.
Eye of the Beholder
The Shortest Straw
Bass player Jason Newsted formerly from thrash band flotsam and Jetsam, joined Metallica after Cliff’s tragic death and went on to play bass for the next 15 years until early 2001.
For Whom The Bell Tolls
In Feb 2003, Robert Trujillo became Metallica’s most recent bassist. Formerly with Suicidal Tendencies and Ozzy Ozbourne, Robert auditioned for the part and after being accepted was given 1 million dollars as an advance payment on the money he would earn by being in Metallica.
