Hey Kier,
Have a few questions. I got this singing package basically to increase my vocal range. I can go from an E2 to a G#4 and I'm sad about that because I can almost never hit the high notes that artists can. So anyhow I listened all the way to CD4. I could do the lip trills but not the tongue trills. That "dr" sound is a bitch. Anyhow I've been practicing CD4 for a couple of days and I haven't seen any change and quite frankly I'm pretty depressed about it. :( I'm not sure if I should try to go as high as I can in my mix voice before cracking into falsetto because that isn't seeming to do much good. :( I wanted to talk to somebody who's done this thing and increased his vocal range. Can you help me? :(

Hi Natalie,

In my opinion, singing success should be used in conjunction with your normal singing practice. You shouldn't just do a few exercises from SS and expect results on their own. You should use the techniques learned via the exercises and apply them to all the songs you sing on a daily basis.

Getting your vocal chords to work in the right manner won't just come straight away with a few exercises, but they will help you understand how your vocals should operate throughout the song. The exercises and warmups help you attain correct positioning of your larynx which should eventually become automatic in your everyday singing.

As for practice regime, it depends how much I have been singing recently. Sometimes I'll go back to basics and go through the main bulk of exercises for an hour or so, then sing for one or two hours more, sometimes I'll just use the 20 minute warm up and then sing for a couple of hours on top. When I'm concentrating on certain songs, I pick certain exercises. Sometimes I just go through the exercises using my guitar with no CD.

Whatever you do, you need to keep your routine fresh and interesting so chop it up a little. Use the CD to get an initial understanding of how to sing, then do what you like. You may find, you are already damn good and don't need it, if so send it back for a refund. :-)

I hope that helps.

LOL I have this too and freaking lazy to practice....but to my surprise now I can hit 4 octaves easily in 3 weeks whereas I couldn't even hit 1 before. this program is wonderful but if you're practicing more diligently you'll get faster results.

Hi Cherie, thanks for your comments. I think you'll find as with most training programs, you get out of it what you put in. The more you use the CD, the more you'll understand what he is trying to help you achieve. It can take a while before things 'click' and there is a lot of repetition, but it will get you used to doing what you need to be doing with your vocals instead of blindly making your own way.

Singing is one of those things that although you know what you are supposed to do, it doesn't happen out of the blue. Once you start learning how to practice properly and become more aware of things like tension in the vocal chords, 'where' to sing from and what to watch out for, you'll find you start to sing in a more controlled way and you should be able to feel when things are working well, or not so well.

The least you should be doing is making use of the warm up section before you sing your own stuff. A decent warm up is always important even if you don't use the main bulk of the SS program as often.

I've been singing again a lot lately and there's no doubt about it, the CD training is definitely a huge help rather than just banging out loads of songs everyday and hoping your voice improves. You need a good mix of both really.

Thanks

Hi there. Thank you for your very detailed review, much appreciated! I was considering getting singing lessons because I thought maybe it was best to have someone there to "guide you", and who will notice if you made and error if you don't notice it yourself. It's funny though, because my Dad gave me "Singing Success" about a year ago, I played with it a little but haven't done much with it since. I think I'd be a fool not to use it (considering it's there!) so I might dabble in it again and see where it takes me. So with daily practice (maybe an hour or two a day in a studio) I would see results fairly quickly? And is Brett a good guide along the way? Thanks! :)

Ideally every day, but it depends how much I'm slacking. At the moment I've been concentrating on my new Artisan business www.originalartisan.com and haven't had much time to practice, but every time I get back on it, the exercises help me regain control much quicker than just plain singing.

It's like anything, excercise your voice properly and you are going to improve steadily instead of just winging it with a few songs. That reminds me, better get back to the vocal training, Summer's not far off.

Hi, yeah, all these singing programs are way to expensive, but just send it back if you don't get on with it... or you could always memorise the techniques and send it back anyway, I'm sure many people do.

I just put up with it cause I paid £14 for one singing lesson about ten years ago and it was a complete waste of time, so I figure if I listen to the CD a hundred times or so, then I've got my money's worth.

I veiwed as much free stuff as I could, there and all over the net when I started out as you can never have to much advice. Most of the time now I just use the warm up exercises near the end of the program before I do my main singing practice, but I go back and do the full course every now and then when I need a push. I put the whole lot on my ipod so I can go through them wherever and when ever I feel like it, along with loads of other songs that I sing live and have to practice.

I find if you get bored singing at home, the best way is to just go out and find some feilds in the middle of nowhere and treck for miles whilst you go through the exercise tracks and your own songs for a couple of hours.

Do that for a couple of weeks and you'll be flying.

Cheers
